Technical Document e-report Variations |
This document attempts to outline the differing options available to end users of e-report. The system is available in a number of configurations, some available now, others in testing or rollout. |
| e-report Internet |
This version of e-report is a client application, but with a difference. Instead of communicating to an SQL Server, either locally on the same machine or across your local network, the Internet version communicates across the Internet to an Application Server on our network. Communication is via the http protocol, so as long as the end user has Internet Browsing capability via Internet Explorer V5 or above no configuration changes have to be made to either the users permissions or your firewall. The client application is however identical in appearance/features to that used in the standard version above. No functionality is lost. We add inspection reports to the database; therefore there are no emails to process by the end user. Program installation is achieved by copying/downloading one file to the users computer, that file is the application. It can be placed on the users desktop and run from there with no further configuration. |
| Web e-report |
This is a standard web site, accessible via a standard browser. Upon logging into the system the user has access to their inspection reports and simple management reports.
The main advantage this has over the other variations is that no software need be installed on the client’s workstation. Alternatively as the “e-report Internet” and “Web e-report” packages talk to the same database, a user could have the Internet application installed on their main computer for the enhanced functionality but still use the Web e-report to keep up to date when they are away from the office. |
| e-report Stand-alone |
The stand-alone form of e-report is Microsoft SQL Server based. On the installation CD is MSDE (a cut down version of SQL Server 7.0) and the client application. The system can either be configured to run on one machine, with both the SQL Server and the client operating on it, or in a more traditional client server configuration with the SQL Server process running on a server and the client application on a number of users workstations accessing the SQL server via an ODBC connection. Inspection reports are delivered to this system by email. One or more users is nominated to receive the reports as email messages in their standard Inbox. This email is a prompt to the user to start up the e-report client application and press the “check mail” button. This causes the application to scan that user’s Inbox for reports and import any it finds into the database. |
